The Next Step in Diving

Diving like any pastime requires practice to perfect existing skills and to learn new ones. This is where the PADI Advanced Open Water and SSI Advanced Adventurer Courses comes in. Most people assume that the 'Advanced' Course is for 'advanced' divers due to it's slightly misleading name.  

What the course is really about is growing an Open Water diver's skill base through five fun filled open water dives and through the online study material and Knowledge Reviews. The course helps build confidence and expand your scuba skills through different Adventure Dives.

The dives that can be conducted on the our course are:

Each dive is actually Dive One from a PADI or SSI Specialty course, so the skills that are taught are a taster of the skills that can be learned on the full specialty courses that are available with us at Dive Now Whangarei.

By taking part in this course you will not only gain confidence in your diving ability, but gain the freedom to take part in a wider variety of fun dives.

This course emphasizes student involvement in all aspects of dive planning and gives them the ability to safely plan the dives independently once the course is finished.

If you are unsure about what interests to follow in diving or just want to improve your skills, then this is the course for you.

April-October the course will include 5 boat dives.  You will do 3 dives on day one.  Normally we do Perfect Buoyancy, Underwater Navigation and Night Dive.  On day two you will do another two dives.  Normally a Deep Dive and a Wreck Dive (if the weather allows us to get to the Wreck) or another dive of your choice at the Poor Knights from the options above.

November-March - same schedule as above but no Night Dive.  You will be able to choose another dive from the above list.


Cost includes all  Charter Fees, SSI training, certification and study materials. Any specialist equipment will be provided for the duration of the course.

A minimum of 2 students are required for this course to run - Maximum of 6

You should have received an email from  SSI or PADI with your registration details.  If you already have the  SSI app on your device you should be able to find the course in your library.  Please let us know as soon as possible if you think you are having any problems with accessing the e-learning. We can help! You can email us straight away with a screenshot of what you are experiencing, and we will get the amazing people at PADI and SSI to jump in and help out.

It is important that your e-learning is complete prior to coming along to the first day of the course when you will do a quick theory review of each of the 5 chosen chapters and brief the skills for the 5 dives.  

Once you log into your app and please complete the Advanced Adventurer Module including the chapters -  Underwater Navigation, Deep, Perfect Buoyancy and then the chapters discussed when booking prior to coming along on the first day of the course.  These may be Night, Wreck, Fish ID, Photography or another.

Once the course starts you'll be spending 1 evening and 2 full days with us meeting at 41 Clyde Street.  

Your Instructor will be in touch regarding when and where the Night Dive will be taking place.

Saturday morning will be spent in store completing  theory and preparing the gear for the Advanced Adventurer dives and Nitrox dives.  We will then transfer to the chosen dives site/s for the day.  

If you need help with transport, please let us know in advance.

At the end of the day, we will return to the store to rinse the gear and organise for the following day.   

On Sunday we will be heading to Paihia to join the charter,   we will meet at the shop at 6.45am to check our gear, analyse nitrox bottles and load our gear into the vehicles for our journey to meet the charter.

Any different times or locations will be communicated ahead of time.

For the sessions, please ensure that you bring along your full dive equipment, completed study materials and something to eat and drink.  Also bring both warm weather gear option (including sunglasses, a sun hat and ocean safe sun screen) and wet weather gear option to stay warm in-between the dives.

Some of the boats we use are open boats so you and your gear will get wet.  There is also limited space on the boats so bring only what you need for the day.

We do have full equipment available for you to rent on your course if you do not have any equipment of your own.

With current COVID restrictions we do ask that you have your own mask and snorkel for the course.  If you don't have one already, don't panic, we can sort you one out when you arrive.  

And, the best part .... you get a great student discount off anything you purchase in-store.  

Please note that if you are unable to make the dates for the course there will be a $50 re-booking fee if you need to change onto another course.  If you change the date within 48 hours of the course or part-way through your course then you will need to pay $200 to change onto another course.  

Lastly,  attached below is a copy of the Medical statement.  Please have a look over the form.  If you answer NO to all the questions then you are all good to go, however, if you answer YES to any of the questions you will need to get your Doctor to sign the form prior to starting the course.
