We keep this group smaller for a quieter, premium experience.

_________________________

Sustainability and science

Our observatory runs entirely on solar and wind power, keeping Star Safari completely off-grid and sustainable.

Surrounding the observatory is our Moon Garden, a living little sanctuary designed to restore local biodiversity and provide shelter and nectar for moths, beetles, and other nocturnal pollinators. The Moon Garden reminds us that darkness nurtures life, and protecting the night sky also means protecting the ecosystems beneath it.

Alongside our telescopes, we operate a Muon Detector, Meteor Camera, and Dark-Sky Meter to study and safeguard the night. These instruments let us measure cosmic particles, photograph falling meteors, and record the darkness that makes Wairarapa skies so extraordinary.

We talk science — sharing the data, the discoveries, and the sense of wonder that connects every one of us to the Universe.

Comfort and wonder

Relax in a Moon Chair with a cup of hot chocolate as you gaze into infinity.

Under a sky celebrated by Lonely Planet as one of the best on Earth, every visitor becomes part of a bigger story — a shared moment of awe, curiosity, and gratitude for the cosmos that made us. Star Safari is a knowledge tourism experience.

_________________________________________________________________________________

Inspiration should be free - so bring your under-16s for free

We believe inspiration belongs to everyone.
That’s why children under 16 join for free — so the next generation can look up, ask questions, and dream without limits.

_________________________________________________________________________________

Follow up
If you’d like to stay in touch, sign up for our newsletter — we love sharing what’s happening under Wairarapa’s dark skies.
You can also explore the Universe from home with us through Slooh, our online observatory partner, where we guide you through real telescope missions and teach the science behind the stars.

Plan your visit

Located just 10 minutes from Martinborough and 80 km from the Wellington International Airport, Star Safari Observatory offers nightly guided sessions, private bookings, and special events.

Dress warmly, bring your sense of wonder, and let the Sky Rangers guide you through Wairarapa’s internationally recognised night sky.

Book your Star Safari and discover why Lonely Planet named Wairarapa stargazing one of the world’s Top 25 Experiences for 2026.

Important Booking Information

Please don’t visit without a booking!

✅ Booking Required: We can only host guests with a confirmed booking — please plan ahead before you come.

Contact Us First: If you’re nearby, call 021 663 808 or 021 269 2908 — please don’t ask the neighbours for directions or access.

Children: Every child must be registered. They worked together for over 50 years, starting at Carter Observatory in Wellington, where they established a programme tracking southern comets and near-Earth asteroids. They then moved to Mt John at the end of 1980, where they ran observing programmes supporting the University of Canterbury research. \r\n\r\nEven though Alan retired in 2014 officially, together with his wife, Pam, they continued their near-Earth asteroid programme on Mt John and assisted with various Canterbury University outreach activities.\r\n\r\nTheir career achievements have been honoured in a New Zealand Post stamp edition (Hari was delighted to have contributed as a writer). \r\n\r\nAlan is a fabulous science communicator, and we are thrilled he finally wrote a book.","price":65.0,"extraPriceType":"ANY","image":{"id":3512928,"itemUrl":"https://img.rezdy.com/EXTRA_IMAGE/Astronomy_and_the_southern_night_sky___Alan_Gilmore_cover.jpeg","thumbnailUrl":"https://img.rezdy.com/EXTRA_IMAGE/Astronomy_and_the_southern_night_sky___Alan_Gilmore_cover_tb.jpeg","mediumSizeUrl":"https://img.rezdy.com/EXTRA_IMAGE/Astronomy_and_the_southern_night_sky___Alan_Gilmore_cover_med.jpeg","largeSizeUrl":"https://img.rezdy.com/EXTRA_IMAGE/Astronomy_and_the_southern_night_sky___Alan_Gilmore_cover_lg.jpeg"}},{"name":"Add $12 to support dark-sky wildlife and light-pollution education in schools.","description":"This contribution supports Spaceward Bound NZ, our school outreach programme focused on space science, dark-sky education, and nocturnal ecology. The entrance is on the Western side of the road and will be marked by a Star Safari flag. As you enter the driveway, you will see a large PRIVATE PROPERTY sign with a Star Safari logo on your right.

At the end of the driveway:

The driveway is gravel and quite long and straight (it is lined on the left with big eucalyptus trees); follow it until you get to the junction, and then follow the gravel road to the right. This will be marked with a Star Safari directions A-frame sign and a permanent sign on the left-hand side of the gate.

First Gate:

Go through the first gate and follow the road around—it will go in a bit of a left-hand curve. Another A-frame with an arrow will point you in the right direction. Keep driving, and you will see a flag on the left next to the Farm Sign that you will also pass.

Second Gate:

At the end of this short farm track, there will be a second open gate marked with a Star Safari flag. Keep following the track to the left as it starts going up the hill a bit. You will go past an oldcottage (will be on your left), and just after that, you will see a fork in the road. Take the left road at the fork, which will be indicated by an arrow on another A-frame sign.

Third Gate:

You will immediately see the Star Safari permanent sign on the gate. Go through and follow the gravel road up to the car park. The attached map shows the route from near the end of the long driveway to where you turn off to the left to go up the hill.

Gravel Road

If you haven’t driven on a gravel road before, there’s no problem, and they are safe. However, our access road can be bumpy in places, so keep your speed below 20 km/h. Also, the gravel road near the top is quite steep, so you need to keep your car moving at a constant speed to maintain traction. You can avoid loss of traction by smoothly applying the accelerator.

If you do get stuck, please call Sam on 021663808; in most cases, you can roll back a couple of metres carefully and try again. Please do not try to accelerate your way out of being stuck, as it will dig a bigger hole in the driveway. If you do go the wrong way and need to reverse, please be very careful and check what’s behind you.
